چکیده

A model is proposed for two observed current–voltage (I – V) patterns in a recent experiment with a scanning tunneling microscope tip and a carbon nanotube @Collins et al., Science 278, 100 ~1997!#. We claim that there are two mechanical contact modes for a tip ~metal!–nanotube ~semiconductor! junction ~1! with or ~2! without a tiny vacuum gap ~0.1–0.2 nm!. With the tip grounded, the tunneling case in ~1! would produce large dI/dV with V.0, small dI/dV with V ,0, and I50 near V50 for an either n or p nanotube; the Schottky mechanism in ~2! would result in IÞ0 only with V,0 for an n nanotube, and the bias polarities would be reversed for a p nanotube. The two observed I – V patterns are thus entirely explained by a tip–nanotube contact of the two types, where the nanotube must be n-type. © 2001 American Institute of Physics. @DOI: 10.1063/1.1357206#

Electrical transport through carbon nanotube junctions created by mechanical manipulation

Using an atomic force microscope we have created nanotube junctions such as buckles and crossings within individual single-wall metallic carbon nanotubes connected to metallic electrodes. The electronic transport properties of these manipulated structures show that they form electronic tunnel junctions. The conductance shows power-law behavior as a function of bias voltage and temperature, whic...

High-yield synthesis of conductive carbon nanotube tips for multiprobe scanning tunneling microscope.

We have established a fabrication process for conductive carbon nanotube (CNT) tips for multiprobe scanning tunneling microscope (STM) with high yield. This was achieved, first, by attaching a CNT at the apex of a supporting W tip by a dielectrophoresis method, second, by reinforcing the adhesion between the CNT and the W tip by electron beam deposition of hydrocarbon and subsequent heating, an...

Four-point probe resistance measurements using PtIr-coated carbon nanotube tips.

We performed four-terminal conductivity measurements on a CoSi2 nanowire (NW) at room temperature by using PtIr-coated carbon nanotube (CNT) tips in a four-tip scanning tunneling microscope. The physical stability and high aspect ratio of the CNT tips made it possible to reduce the probe spacing down to ca. 30 nm. The probe-spacing dependence of resistance showed diffusive transport even at 30 ...

Subbands in Carbon Nanotubes under Radial Deformation

Carbon nanotubes, which consist of only carbon atoms, were first discovered by Iijima [1] and can be thought of as a single layer of graphite that is wrapped into a cylinder. The cylindrical nanotubes are very stable and are regarded as the strongest fibers ever; nanotubes are extremely rigid to distortions along the tube axis whereas they are very flexible to those perpendicular to the axis [2...

Theory of a scanning tunneling microscope with a two-protrusion tip.

We consider a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) such that tunneling occurs through two atomically sharp protrusions on its tip. When the two protrusions are separated by at least several atomic spacings, the differential conductance of this STM depends on the electronic transport in the sample between the protrusions. Such two-protrusion tips commonly occur during STM tip preparation. We expl...
